Chef Evan Nelms is the Executive Chef for Tavern 19 at Independence!

Executive Chef Evan is a Midlothian, Virginia native who has been able to develop his culinary expertise through his various kitchen roles. He started as a young dish washer at Salisbury Country Club a few years ago. From there, he was promoted to a line cook where he was given more responsibility and control in the kitchen. As a line cook, Chef Evan began developing his passion for cooking.

After serving as a kitchen manager in another local restaurant, Chef was given the opportunity to take over as Sous Chef at Tavern 19 at Independence – just a few minutes from his childhood home. Serving as Sous Chef required hard work, patience, and creativity in the kitchen. The position allowed Chef Evan to further develop his skills and own personal culinary style. After proving himself as Sous Chef, Evan was again promoted to Banquet Chef at Tavern 19. He enjoyed this role as he was able to provide exceptional food quality and experiences for parties of up to 250 people at once. Chef Evan realized it was the interaction with his customers and clients that made the culinary journey so rewarding.

Given his experience as both Sous Chef and Banquet Chef, it was apparent that Evan was the best choice to serve as the new Executive Chef at Tavern 19. In addition to his incredible dishes, Chef Evan is best known among his colleagues for his leadership and cooperation in the kitchen. This past year, Chef Evan’s Tavern 19 kitchen was awarded “Best Pizza” and “Best Parent’s Night Out” by Richmond Magazine. While he is best known for his award winning pizza, Chef Evan’s favorite dish to prepare is his version of the “catch of the day” – including rockfish, sautéed kale and herb rice with a roasted corn tomato cream sauce. He loves being able to add his own flavor and style to simple dishes. He appreciates being able to work in his home town and having access to local farms and the freshest products.

When not in the kitchen, Chef Evan cherishes time spent with his family. He has two wonderful children, one 3 years-old and the other 6 years-old, who are both very active. The family enjoys playing outside and participating in various community sports.
