At Keany we are dedicated to sustainability, making the conscious decision to source apples from local farmers when available. By sourcing local apples, we’re not only reducing our carbon footprint but also supporting the local economy. This approach allows us to provide fresher, higher-quality apples to our customers while strengthening our connection with the community and the environment.

Crown Orchards

Crown Orchards is located in Batesville, VA, and has been a partner with us since 1998. The Chiles Family started Crown Orchards back in 1912. Their operations, now run by Henry and Huff Chiles, span over 1,000 mountaintop acres in Virginia with beautiful panoramic views of Charlottesville. After four generations, they have been one of Central Virginia’s most prolific fruit growers. They boast seven major orchards within a 15-mile radius with acres of peaches, nectarines, and local apples. Crown Orchards has developed a computerized state-of-the-art packing facility to streamline the process from farm to fork. The orchards also have over 2,800 solar panels producing nearly a megawatt of power and providing clean energy for the next 30-plus years.

Hess Farms

The three Hess brothers run the day-to-day operations, including the packing house, wholesale business, and retail stand. Hess Farms located just north of the Mason-Dixon Line, in Waynesboro, PA, is one of the largest family-owned and operated farms in its area, growing a large variety of crops. Organized by Harlon Hess, they produce an extensive range of crops including peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, squash varieties, and local apples. These vegetables are a great source of Vitamin C, especially since they are freshly picked with care at their peak harvest state.

Bear Mountain Orchards

Located in Aspers, PA, Bear Mountain Orchards has been a partner with us for the past 10 years. The Lott Family started Bear Mountain Orchards back in 1937 with just 40 acres. Now, with over 75 years of growing experience, Bear Mountain has over 1,000 acres of tree fruit in production, featuring apples, peaches, and nectarines. They practice Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to produce the highest quality, best tasting fruit that is safely grown and harvested. Under this program, pesticides are only used when warranted and growers follow strict instructions while in use. Along with IPM practices, Bear Mountain is also Primus GFS Certified (a global food safety initiative scheme).
